How Long Does Filler Last? A Type-by-Type Breakdown

It is one of the first questions people ask, and the answers online are all over the map. Six months. Two years. Five years. All of those can be true, depending on what you got and where it went.

Filler longevity is not one number. It depends on the material, the area treated, and your own body. Here is the breakdown.

Why the Material Matters Most

Not all fillers are made of the same stuff, and the material sets the outer limits on how long results hold.

Most fillers used today are made of hyaluronic acid, usually shortened to HA. That is a substance your body already makes, and it works by attracting and holding water, which creates volume right away. Your body slowly breaks it down over time.

A smaller group works differently. Instead of simply adding volume, these prompt your body to build its own collagen. They are often called biostimulatory fillers, and they tend to last longer because the result comes partly from tissue your body made itself.

Longevity by Filler Type

Filler type

Made of

Typical duration

HA fillers (Juvederm, Restylane)

Hyaluronic acid

About 6 to 18 months

Radiesse

Calcium hydroxylapatite

About 12 to 18 months

Sculptra

Poly-L-lactic acid

About 2 years or more

Bellafill

PMMA microspheres

5 years or longer

A few notes on that table.

HA fillers are the most common by far, and the range is wide because the category is wide. Within HA, the products differ. Firmer, more cross-linked fillers with larger particles tend to last longer than softer ones with fine particles. That is why one Restylane product may hold for around nine to twelve months while a softer one in the same family fades in four to six.

Radiesse adds volume immediately and stimulates collagen as it breaks down, which is why it tends to run longer than most HA fillers.

Sculptra is the odd one out. It does not really add volume on day one. It works gradually, building collagen over several months, which means results appear slowly and last a long time. It usually takes a series of sessions.

Bellafill is semi-permanent, and that cuts both ways. Long results are appealing, but a result you dislike is much harder to undo. That tradeoff is worth thinking hard about.

Where It Goes Changes Everything

Here is the factor most people overlook. The same syringe of the same product will last different amounts of time depending on where it is placed.

The reason is movement. Areas that move constantly break filler down faster. Areas that stay relatively still hold it longer.

  • Lips: roughly 6 to 12 months. Your mouth never stops moving, so lips are on the shorter end. That is also why aftercare matters here, and our post on what to avoid after lip filler is worth a read before your appointment.

  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds): roughly 9 to 18 months.

  • Cheeks: roughly 12 to 24 months. Less movement, longer hold.

  • Under eyes: roughly 12 to 18 months.

  • Jawline: roughly 12 to 18 months.

So if someone tells you filler lasts a year, ask them where. The answer changes by region of the face.

Your Body Is the Third Variable

Even with the same product in the same spot, two people can get different mileage. A few reasons why.

Metabolism. People who burn through things quickly tend to break down filler faster too. Younger patients often metabolize it more quickly, which surprises people who assume the opposite.

Enzyme activity. Your body makes an enzyme called hyaluronidase that breaks down hyaluronic acid. How much of it you have naturally varies from person to person, and that alone can shift your timeline.

How much was used. A conservative amount in a large area will look faded sooner than a fuller correction, even if the product is technically still present.

Injection depth and technique. Filler placed deeper, against bone, often outlasts filler placed superficially. This is another place where the injector's skill affects your result.

Lifestyle. Sun exposure and smoking both work against you. UV damage breaks down hyaluronic acid and collagen alike. Daily sunscreen is the single easiest thing you can do to protect both your filler and your skin.

What "Gone" Actually Means

One thing worth clearing up. Filler does not stay perfect and then vanish on a set date. It fades gradually.

You will usually notice softening well before it is fully absorbed. That is why providers often suggest a check-in before the outer edge of the range, so you can touch up while some support remains rather than starting over from zero.

Also worth knowing: with HA fillers, the final result is not immediate. Swelling typically peaks in the first day or two and settles over about a week, and it can take a few weeks for everything to look settled. Judge your result then, not on day two.

The Reversibility Difference Nobody Mentions

Here is a point that matters more than duration for many people.

HA fillers can be dissolved. An injectable enzyme called hyaluronidase breaks them down, usually within a day or two. If you dislike your result, if it settles unevenly, or if there is a rare complication, there is a way out.

The longer-lasting options do not have that escape hatch. Hyaluronidase does not dissolve Radiesse, Sculptra, or PMMA. Those have to be waited out or dealt with in more involved ways.

So longer is not automatically better. A twelve-month HA filler you can adjust may be a smarter first step than a five-year one you cannot. We cover this in more detail in our post on whether you can dissolve dermal filler, especially if you are new to injectables.

The Honest Answer

How long will your filler last? Somewhere between six months and a couple of years for most treatments, with the exact answer depending on the product, the placement, and your body.

The better question to bring to a consultation is not which filler lasts longest. It is which filler fits the area, the look you want, and how much flexibility you want to keep. Those are different questions, and the answers do not always point the same direction.

At Lux, our approach to dermal fillers starts with what you are trying to achieve, then works backward to the product that fits.
