PRP vs PRF: What Is the Real Difference and Which Is Better?

If you have looked into treatments for thinning hair or tired skin, you have run into two sets of letters: PRP and PRF. They look alike. They sound alike. Plenty of websites use them as if they mean the same thing.
They do not. The difference is small on paper and real in practice. Here is what separates them, in plain words.
Both Start With Your Own Blood
Let us begin with what they share, because that part is the same.
Both treatments use your own blood as the raw material. The steps look like this:
A provider draws a small amount of blood, much like a routine lab test.
The tube goes into a centrifuge, a machine that spins very fast.
Spinning separates the blood into layers by weight.
The layer packed with platelets gets collected and used where you need it.
Why platelets? Platelets are the cells your body rushes to a cut to start repair. They carry growth factors, which are chemical signals that tell nearby cells to rebuild tissue and grow new blood supply. Concentrating those platelets and placing them where you want repair is the whole idea behind both treatments.
Because the material comes from your own body, the risk of an allergic reaction is very low. That is a big part of the appeal.
PRP: The Original Version
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It came first, which is why researchers call it the first-generation platelet concentrate.
To make PRP, your blood is drawn into a tube that holds an anticoagulant. That is a substance that keeps blood from clotting. The tube is then spun at a high speed, which pulls the platelets into a concentrated liquid.
That anticoagulant is the catch. It keeps the sample liquid and easy to inject, but it also interrupts your body's natural clotting process. Since growth factor release is tied to clotting, that additive changes how the platelets behave once they are back in your body.
There is a second issue. Once PRP is activated, it dumps its payload fast. Research shows roughly 95 percent of its growth factors release shortly after activation. You get a strong burst of signal, and then it fades.
PRF: The Next Generation
PRF stands for platelet-rich fibrin. It was developed to solve those two problems, which is why it gets called the second-generation platelet concentrate.
Two things change in how it is made. First, no anticoagulant. Your blood goes into a plain tube and gets spun right away, so it clots naturally the way your body intends. Second, the spin is slower and shorter.
That gentler spin matters more than it sounds. A softer spin keeps more of the good material in the mix. PRF holds onto more platelets, more white blood cells, and fibrin, which is the mesh your body builds to hold a healing clot together.
That fibrin mesh is the real difference. It works like a sponge. Instead of releasing everything at once, the mesh traps the platelets and lets growth factors seep out slowly over days and even weeks. You trade the quick burst for a long, steady release that looks a lot more like natural healing.

You may also see PRF broken into types on a menu. L-PRF holds platelets and white cells in a firm clot. A-PRF uses an even slower spin and carries more growth factors. Injectable PRF, sometimes called i-PRF or fluid PRF, stays liquid so it can be injected like a filler. Same family, different textures for different jobs.
So Which One Is Better?
Here is the honest answer: PRF has real advantages on paper, but better depends on what you are treating.
PRF tends to make sense when you want a slow, steady release over time. That fits skin rejuvenation, hair restoration, and healing support, and it is why many providers have shifted toward it. It also avoids the anticoagulant entirely, which some people prefer.
PRP still has its place. It has been studied far longer, so there is a much bigger pile of research behind it, especially for hair loss. One more point worth knowing. Because PRF is newer, the research behind it is still catching up. Early results look promising, and the science makes sense, but it has not been studied as long or as widely as PRP. Any provider who tells you PRF is proven to beat PRP for every use is getting ahead of the evidence.
What Actually Matters More Than the Letters
Here is the part most articles skip. The prep method matters as much as the label.
Spin speed, spin time, tube type, and how the sample is handled all change what ends up in the final product. Two clinics can both say PRP and hand you very different things. That is why the provider matters more than the acronym on the menu.
The right question is not which letters are better in general. It is which one fits your goal, your skin or scalp, and your health.
